Certainly you do see it in some other series, like Samurai Champoo (which is, not incidentally, made by a lot of the same people), but I think you also see it in a lot of Western media as well–for example, the collected works of Joss Whedon. When I was referring to tropes, I was thinking more of things like chibis.
