I do think my reading was colored by having read other (more recent) series with this trope; Hana-Kimi probably works better if you don't have that context. I definitely get the impression that others seem to like it more than I do. It has, after all, been adapted into not one but two Asian dramas (Japanese and Taiwanese), with one more (Korean) on the way soon!

Interesting–thanks for posting this. I’ve been wondering about Hana-Kimi since reading others’ comments in passing; the local library (well, the small system that owns a copy) has claimed to have vol. 1 “in transit” for three months, which might mean it’s lost.

I’m still curious for myself, but now I feel less inclined to purchase a copy as the next step in quelling my curiosity.
